After you have painted a beautiful piece of furniture and staged and photographed it, you now need to list or create a posting to get it sold. There are usually no hard, fast rules for the descriptions on most sites. It's up to you to provide a description to sell your piece quickly. It's important to give your potential buyers the basics.
BASICS of a DESCRIPTION
Branded name or maker of the piece: Always use this if available on the piece. Many times this alone will sell a piece and often command a higher price if it is from a quality furniture maker. Take a picture of the brand (usually found in the top left drawer) to add to the photographs in the listing.
Dimensions: Don't make your customers guess at the size! Double check your measurements before including them in your listing. Make sure your dimensions are easily understood. Industry standard is: width x depth x height. 64" W x 18" D x 32" H
Color and Finish: Even though it's apparent to you what the color is, your photo's might not give a true indication of the actual hue. Describe the color and give a short explanation of a the finish, such as, "dark wax finish." Many painters will note using a well-known or specialty paint brand. However, you don't need to tell your "trade secrets."
BEYOND THE BASICS:
Interest your customer: Catchy phrases and descriptive words will grab the attention of potential buyers. Especially in the title! Using adjectives such as gorgeous, stunning, dramatic will get attention but be careful in over-using these words.
Create a need: Make them want to buy your piece! Create a vision or a need for the customer to want your piece by suggesting other uses. A dresser can be used as a tv console, entry piece, or buffet. A china hutch can hold trophies, books, collections, or linens. Suggest places for use such as, "a great table for your cabin or beach house."
Special details: Highlighting special accessories, details, or finishes is a great way to sway a potential customer. Include descriptions such as dove-tailed drawers, solid wood, divided sections, adjustable shelves, lighting, etc.
Payment terms: Always specify your preferred payment terms such as cash, PayPal, Square, etc. Also state when payment is expected, i.e. "cash due upon pickup."
First Come, First Served: Many painters will state "no holds" or require a non-refundable deposit to hold an item. This can be easily done through online banking services such as Square or PayPal.
Delivery options: Make sure you let potential customers know if you offer delivery. Include specifics if you only deliver to the first floor, front porch, or safe meeting places.
As-is, returns, or refund policy: Add a short statement on your policy for returns. Include a reminder that they are buying used, as-is furniture.
Tell a story: Many furniture painters will tell the story or history of a piece to create interest and use personality.
REMINDERS and EXTRA'S
